They face tremendous odds and the ever-present threat of extreme violence and homophobic attacks in their fight for the freedom to love.
Synopsis
March for Dignity follows a small group of LGBTI+ activists in Tbilisi, Georgia as they attempt to conduct the first Pride march in the country. They face overwhelming opposition from far-right groups, the government and the Georgian Orthodox Church who have a history of inciting violent attacks on the LGBTI+ community. With membership of the European Union, and anti-Russian sentiment firmly on the political agenda, Georgians are at a turning point in history where they must choose to fight for progress and human rights, or concede to greater Russian influence. In the midst of this geopolitical turmoil, the committed organisers of Tbilisi Pride bravely strive to be visible in their evolving country.
Giorgi Tabagari is one of the founders of Tbilisi Pride. Whilst studying and living in Europe, he witnessed the rampant homophobia in Georgia that culminated in the 2013 attacks and decided to return home to Tbilisi to work in LGBT activism.Giorgi worked for human rights organisations before dedicating his time to the actions ofTbilisiPride2019/20, where he continues as of 2021.
Mariam Kvaratskheila is a Tbilisi Pride founder, who was first becoming involved in LGBT activism at the time of the 2013 homophobic attacks, which empowered her to work full time in the field. She is a human rights lawyer, working in LGBT discrimination and Georgian legal rights. Currently, she lives, and studies for he rMasters degree in Brighton [UK], and plans to later return to Georgia to continue working in human rights.
Tamas Sozashvili worked for Equality Movement Georgia, an LGBTQ advocacy group, before co-founding Tbilisi Pride in 2019.They’ve been highly visible on the front lines of every protest, and regularly appearing onTV news in Georgia with homophobic far-right groups.Leading upto the first Tbilisi Pride,Tamas spoke in Vienna at Euro Pride to spread the message and reach wider communities for support. He continues to work with Tbilisi Pride.
