Synopsis
From an Emmy-award winning filmmaker, LOSING SIGHT OF SHORE follows the extraordinary journey of four brave women known as the Coxless Crew that set out to row across the Pacific Ocean from America to Australia unsupported. After training extensively mentally and physically for almost 4 years, the crew is finally ready to embark on the great unknown. The journey takes place in 3 stages: San Francisco to Hawaii, Hawaii to Samoa and Samoa to Australia with short breaks on land in between. The Coxless Crew row 24 hours a day, in 2 hour shifts no matter the conditions – four-story waves, a tropical storm, and an endless ocean all around. These women only have each other to lean on as they attempt to set two world records, and capture their own intimate experiences at sea.
These fearless women are rowing in support of two charities – Breast Cancer Care and Walking with the Wounded and Team Lead Laura Penhaul describes her personal motivation to row in honor of her friend Patricia who passed away leaving behind her husband and son. Beyond that, the women are rowing to prove how powerful the human spirit can be, do something no team of four has ever accomplished and see parts of the Earth no human has seen.
As they row over 8,000 miles during their nine months at sea, they face extreme mental and physical challenges they must overcome in order to go down in history. From salt sores and extreme weather, to impressive wildlife swimming alongside their faithful boat “Doris,” to missed holidays and family events, this team of rowers endures the unimaginable all in pursuit of greatness.
This is a story of perseverance, friendship, and the power of the human spirit. The Coxless Crew show us what we are all capable of when pushed to the limit, and that nothing is impossible.
Everyone has a Pacific to cross. What’s yours?
