In light of the anniversary of the Beirut tragedy this August, we relive what happened one year ago: a story of ruined lives and a ruined city.

Synopsis:

Through 30 interviews and stunning footage both of the event and of the aftermath, we piece the day together. The protagonists tell us where they were and what happened to them, their families and friends and of the courageous rebuilding that took place almost immediately. We investigate the story of the incredibly dangerous stock of lethal explosive ammonium nitrate that was mysteriously held in the port for seven years before exploding.

Half a dozen key victims take us from the fire in the port to the one-year anniversary. Roger, a war photographer, Paul and Tracy who lost their daughter and engage in a fight for justice and truth, entrepreneur Eli Khoury who describes the political background to the storage of such a huge stock of explosives in the port, and charity organisations that step in to clean up and press for reforms. Artists and architects describe the destruction of Beirut's irreplaceable heritage, but at its centre, victims reveal where they were the moment a shock wave rocked their lives, killed their loved ones and left their city in ruins.
